Meet the Father-Son Team behind BNG Units Ltd
Meet the Father-Son team delivering BNG Units to the East of England
Meet Angus and Sean Dudley: the father-and-son team behind BNG Units Ltd. With decades of experience in development and deep roots in land stewardship, they bring a rare perspective to the world of Biodiversity Net Gain. In this short interview, they share their backgrounds, the inspiration behind the business, and what drives their commitment to both people and nature.
What was your professional background before starting BNG Units Ltd?
Angus: I was lucky to have grown up on a farm where I would often help with the ongoing maintenance, planting and tending of the land. My parents had already started land restoration on parts of the farm to help increase biodiversity, and I would often be needed to help plant a few hundred saplings after school!
Once I left school, I began working as a labourer for our family building business: Dudley Developments. Here I gained hands-on experience on-site and learnt the building process from the ground up, just as my father had done over three decades ago. I progressed to managing a complex refurbishment project where I converted a large house into four terraced houses. I completed this while continuing to work on other new-build projects, ranging from a few houses to entire apartment blocks, depending on the site.
Sean: For over 35 years, I have been building and developing primarily in the Cambridge area. Since the early 2000s, my focus expanded beyond construction to nature creation and management, starting with an intense and ambitious planting programme at our farm. Over the years, we have planted more than 20,000 native trees, shrubs and hedging plants. This journey has naturally led us to embrace a focus on wilding and biodiversity.

Why did you start BNG Units Ltd?
Angus: Working in development, we recognised early on that Biodiversity Net Gain would soon become a legal requirement. After the Environment Act 2021 received Royal Assent, it became clear to me that nearly every developer would be affected by the legislation. With the sector already facing pressures such as planning delays and rising material and labour costs, the additional requirement to procure BNG Units presented a significant challenge.
As I had already taken a personal interest in the biodiversity improvements on our farm, I saw an opportunity to help developers. I wanted to create a way for BNG compliance to be quick, reliable and hassle-free, which led to the founding of BNG Units Ltd in 2024.
Sean: Angus has been the key driver behind the start of BNG Units Ltd, I have been fortunate to help guide him and grow his vision.
What sets BNG Units Ltd apart from others in the BNG space?
Angus: As a family business with over 35 years of property development experience across Cambridgeshire, who have managed established wilding projects on our family farm, we offer a unique perspective of both sides of the new Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) legislation.
We are here to support developers at every stage, from the initial survey through to fulfilling all BNG requirements. We offer knowledgeable, reliable guidance grounded in our experience as both developers and dedicated land stewards.
Sean: We obviously have a deep connection with both development and nature in our local area. By combining this knowledge base, we’ve been able to form a pragmatic approach to BNG delivery that works for developers, while being fully understanding of the rigorous obligations that managing 30 years of biodiversity entails.
What motivates you to do this work?
Angus: Having come from a development background, I understand the real challenges developers face: tight deadlines, rising costs, and complex planning requirements. This makes it particularly rewarding to offer a service that supports both nature recovery and the industry I’ve grown up in.
Sean: My wife, Katie, and I worked in a National Park in Tanzania when we were first married, and the effects of being immersed in nature have never really left us. For many years, we have been working to enhance the biodiversity on our farm. With the establishment of BNG Units Ltd, we have the exciting opportunity to expand these efforts both here and elsewhere as we bring forward new enhancement sites.
Conclusion
Sean and Angus founded BNG Units Ltd on practical experience, local knowledge, and a long-standing commitment to biodiversity. With them at the helm, the business continues to offer developers and planners something different: direct access to high-quality, policy-aligned units from people who genuinely understand the land they manage and the long-term impact of getting BNG right.
